This qualification is suitable for fitness professionals which already work with, or would like to work with, older adults (65+ years). The demand for physical activity and exercise suitable for older adults is continuously increasing with emphasis being placed on it helping to maintain independence and wellbeing. 
If you would like to expand on your knowledge, skills and competence to safely plan and adapt exercise for independently active, older people in an unsupervised manner then this is the course for you.

This course is suitable for anyone with the drive and passion to improve the health, fitness and wellbeing of individuals aged 65+. Regardless of whether you are a personal trainer, yoga teacher or gym instructor, the age spectrum of your clients will be broad; therefore, it is essential to understand what exercises can and cannot be performed by different age groups. This qualification enables you to expand on your current roles and is a potential to earn more money.

Study Format

This course is offered as blended online learning with the support of a mentor. You can study at a time and place that is suitable for you, making courses more accessible. Studying will take place within our learning platform online. The information is taught via a series of video delivered PowerPoint presentations to replicate the experience in the classroom, with interactive activities and quizzes to check on your learning progress as you move through the units. It is suitable for use with all modern devices.

You are also required to attend a venue where your theory paper assessment will take place.

Length of Course & Locations

It is recommended that this course would take approximately 2-3 weeks to complete plus the assessment day. This is based on 2-3 hours of learning per day. If you were able to complete more training each day then you would be able to complete it faster; equally if you are not able to commit 2-3 hours a day then it may take slightly longer. You are also required to submit a worksheet and case study therefore time to complete these should also be taken in to account. A timescale will be discussed between you and your mentor to help give you an idea of course duration.

  • What are the pre-requisites for this course?
    Learners must hold one or more of the following:
    Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing or equivalent
    Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Walking

    The assessments include:
    1 theory paper
    1 worksheet

    You will work with your mentor to determine a provisional date for your assessments which is flexible around your commitments.

  • Is there a time period this course must be completed within?
    Yes, all courses must be fully completed within 1 year from enrollment. The average learner completes within 4 weeks.
  • Is this course approved?
    By the end of this course you will be a fully qualified instructor, receiving a Level 3 Award in Adapting Exercise for Independently Active, Older People (YMCA Awards). You will gain Level 3 status on to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) and awarded 20 CPD points. This course does not allow for entry onto the register at Level 3.
